The short answer
An Instagram MCP server is a connector that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT work in your Instagram account when you ask: read your comments and results, post, or set up comment-to-DM. Meta has not published its own, so it comes from third parties. Choose one built on Meta’s official API, never one that asks for your Instagram password. To connect it, you add its web address to your assistant once and sign in.
What MCP means, in plain words
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. The project’s own definition is that it is “an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems”, and it compares MCP to a USB-C port for AI (Model Context Protocol).
For you, that means your assistant can stop just giving advice about your Instagram and start doing the work in it. You type “DM everyone who comments GUIDE” and the connector does it in your account, instead of you clicking through a builder.
The three kinds of Instagram MCP server
| Kind | What it is | Who it suits | The risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted connector | A company runs the server. You paste one address and sign in. | Anyone who doesn’t want to touch code | You rely on that company. Check it uses Meta’s login. |
| Open-source server | Code you run yourself, wrapping Meta’s official API. | Developers | You handle Meta’s app setup, your keys and the hosting. |
| Browser automation | A tool that drives a logged-in browser, as if it were you. | Reading public pages, at most | It isn’t the official route, and it is where account trouble starts. |
Examples, so you can compare for yourself. Hosted: Inrō, Composio and Mentorship Boss, which we make. Open-source: mcpware/instagram-mcp. They do different jobs, so read what each one can actually change. Some only read your numbers, some only publish, and some run DM automation.
What to check before you connect one
- 1Does it send you to Meta to log in? If it asks for your Instagram password, stop. Meta’s official route is a login on Meta’s own page.
- 2What can it change, and does it ask first? A connector can act in your account. Look for a preview before anything goes live, especially for DM rules that will message real people.
- 3Does it work on the plan you already have? Claude’s help center says custom connectors work on every plan, with Free limited to one (Anthropic). Some connectors have their own plan requirements too, so check before you build on one.
- 4Is your account eligible? Instagram’s messaging API needs a professional account (Business or Creator). A personal account won’t work with any of these.
- 5What happens after the DM? If you sell coaching, the DM is one step. Check where the email goes, who follows up, and where the call gets booked.
How to add one to Claude or ChatGPT
The steps change as these apps update, so treat this as the shape of it and follow your connector’s own instructions.
In Claude
Open Customize, then Connectors, add a custom connector and paste the server’s address. Claude opens the connector’s sign-in page, and it is connected after that. The server has to be on the public internet, because Anthropic’s cloud makes the connection rather than your computer (Anthropic).
In ChatGPT
In our testing in November 2026, you add it once in a browser, on a computer or a phone, under plugins, with “Add custom MCP server”. It then works in the phone app as well. ChatGPT asks you to confirm each change.
Then test it on something small
Ask it to read something first: “Which of my last five posts got the most comments?” Then make one small change, and check it in Instagram with your own eyes. Comment from a second account to test any DM rule, because the first DM to someone who doesn’t follow you lands in Message requests (how comment-to-DM works).
What it can’t get around
An AI assistant doesn’t change Meta’s rules. A private reply is still one message per comment, sent within seven days of the comment, and you can continue only after the person replies, within 24 hours of their reply (Meta for Developers). We go through what actually gets accounts restricted in will comment-to-DM get my Instagram banned?
Your assistant can also be wrong. It can misread what you asked or write something off-brand, which is why a preview step matters more here than the number of tools a connector lists.
Where Mentorship Boss fits
We make Mentorship Boss, so read this as a description, not a review. It is a hosted connector on Meta’s official API, built for coaches and educators who sell through Instagram. You can connect it to Claude or ChatGPT on any plan, including Free, and ask it to set up comment-to-DM, write email and text follow-ups, post and schedule reels, book calls and report what is working. New DM rules and follow-ups come back as a preview and are saved only when you say yes.
If all you want is comment-to-DM and you’re happy building flows, a DM tool may be simpler and cheaper. We compare the two on our ManyChat alternative page, including where ManyChat wins.
